Lagavulin

The Lagavulin distillery was founded in 1816 by John Johnstone, and is situated on Islay, surrounded by dark peaty bogs. It draws its water from the Solan Lochs nearby, and the distillery is world renowned for producing some of the smokiest whiskies available on the market. Lagavulin has Scotland’s slowest distillation process, taking five hours for the first distillation and nine for the second. This contributes to the distinctive dry character and heavily peated flavours. Currently, up to 98% of the spirit is kept for maturation as a single malt, therefore there are almost no independent bottlings available.
