The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old Sherry Cask – Tasting Review

It is with great excitement that I write this taste review as The Balvenie single barrel first fill 12 year old was one of my favourite whisky discoveries of 2013. Today I have the great pleasure of tasting The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old Sherry Cask, and as first impressions go I am extremely impressed.

As you would expect from a sherry cask whisky, this Balvenie sherry cask is a deep amber colour; which to me just oozes sophistication. Each oloroso sherry butt in which this whisky aged, gives way to 650 bottles, each of which is hand numbered. Each single batch from each single butt will clearly vary in its character , but this is a quality that, for me, simply adds to the wonder of this whisky.

So how does it compare to last year’s strong contender; a dram that I held with high regard?

Well, as its appearance suggested, The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old Sherry Cask is something special. Much like its colour, there is a depth to this whisky that grabs your attention from the offset.

On the nose is a fruity aroma that is soon joined by a wave of nuts and toffee. On the palate is the dominant presence of sherry wonderfully gifted to this whisky by those magnificent oloroso sherry butts. More dried fruit follows leading to a rich sweet taste. On the finish this sweetness lingers bringing out, yet again, that invitingly warm fruity character.

Before tasting The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old Sherry Cask I was a little apprehensive, perhaps nervous that it wouldn’t live up to the fantastic discovery I made in the 12 year old single barrel first fill in 2013. However, having made acquaintance I can firmly say that with The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old Sherry Cask you will be in great company.
