Scots and non-Scots around the world raise a dram to the Immortal Memory of Rabbie Burns on Wednesday 25th January, the question is: which whisky will you choose?
Every year my family and I sit down to a lovely bit of haggis, neeps and tatties on January 25th. Some years we'll head out to a ceilidh and
strip the willow, others we'll just gather together and enjoy a meal together. Wherever we spend Burns Night, the one thing we can't be without is a wee dram! How can you toast the Bard with anything but a drop of the water of life?
This year I've got a few choice whiskies put by from the shop for each course. To start us off, we have the Selkirk Grace in preparation for Scotch broth and crusty bread. That calls for a nice dram of our new single cask Springbank 21 year old from 1992 with its hints of smoke over a sweet palate.
The main course, a properly piped-in and addressed haggis, with the traditional accompaniments of bashed neeps and champit tatties, is set off nicely by our very own Loch Fyne Craigellachie 10 Year Old single cask expression, its rich fruit notes giving some welcome contrast.
For dessert there's always cranachan, a lovely dish of toasted oats, honey, raspberries and cream. My mouth is watering just thinking of it! The lovely sherry notes of Glenrothes Sherry Cask Reserve will wash it down nicely.
To round off the night there'll be the usual chorus of Auld Lang Syne and no doubt a few more drams! It's not the most traditional of Burns Nights - we're not strict on the Toast to the Lassies, the Lassies' Reply or the Immortal Memory - but it's our tradition and we like it.
