The Bowmore Exceptional Cask Collection 1989 34 Year Old is a truly special dram from one of Islay’s most respected distilleries. Aged for a grand 34 years, starting off in a bourbon hogshead before getting a wee 10-month finish in fresh sherry quarter casks, it’s a fine example of Bowmore’s knack for making world-class whisky. Our Hamish has had a sip and jotted down his thoughts.
Nose: Bonfire embers, stewed prunes, and a touch of barbecued meat—backed up by dried fruits and sweet butterscotch.
Palate: Rich and rounded, with coal smoke, dark berries, a zing of lime marmalade, and well-worn oak.
Finish: Long and smooth, with dark chocolate, a hint of aniseed, and warming wood spice that just lingers on.
