Gustave Flaubert Born in France in 1821, Gustave Flaubert was a leading proponent of literary realism – an ethos which he carried into his personal aesthetic. Devoted to a life devoid of the inexact, abstract or clichéd, Flaubert was known for the painstaking process of writing and revision which he dedicated to every creation “trying to write harmonious sentences avoiding assonances”. Famed for his first published novel, Madame Bouvary, he was always seeking “le mot juste” (the right word) for every sentiment.
