Caol Ila is situated on the North of Islay, and was built in 1847. Loch Nam Ban is the water source for these rich and characterful whiskies, typical of the region, as the waters pass through peat and limestone before being distilled. A range of Single malt bottlings has been introduced in recent years, but most of the whisky produced is used in blends such as Johnnie Walker and Black Bottle.
WAS £51 - Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, it is the largest distillery on Islay - producing 6.5 million litres of alcohol per year.
Caol Ila takes its name from the Gaelic for ' sound of Islay'. In 1879 the pier was buuilt to allow 'puffers' to load and unload cargo.
A special release from the Diageo collection in 2014. The oldest official bottling to date from the distillery.
After first maturing in American oak this whisky undergoes further maturation in Moscatel wine casks, which enhances the smoky sweet flavours.
Gaelic for 'dawn', it is a lot lighter than standard Caol Ila. It was one of the first Caol Ilas to be bottled without an age stamp, going on the taste alone.
