Dalmore Cigar Malt – Tasting Review

As the name may suggest, Dalmore Whisky’s cigar malt is a whisky best enjoyed with a rich and spicy cigar; perhaps a Paragas Serie P No. 2 or No. 4. The whisky itself is a joyful drink and should be treasured for those moments in life in which one can simply relax and enjoy its comforting taste.

The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve is actually a reworking of the original Dalmore Cigar Malt which was discontinued in 2009. The new version is significantly different, incorporating older stocks and a more adventurous ageing process with multiple casks adding to this whisky’s distinct character.

The original Dalmore Cigar Malt combined stocks that were between 8 to 14 years old. The new reserve is assembled of stocks aged up to 15 years. The new version is also matured in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and Matusalem Oloroso sherry casks from Gonazlez Byass, before a final ageing takes place in premier cru Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels. This is a far more complex ageing process than the original Cigar Malt and is reflected in the whisky’s ABV of 44% which ensures the taste profile cuts through an harmonises with cigar smoke.

In terms of tasting notes the nose is extremely welcoming with a warm essence of caramel, chocolate and biscuit. The palate is rich and friendly, carrying on the theme presented by the nose, toffee and caramel with a hint of orange zest. To finish are bolder bursts of orange zest and crushed spices, as a rather festive taste lingers in the mouth.

As a whisky to enjoy alongside a fine cigar, the Damlore Cigar Malt Reserve is a great choice, however the fact is, this is simply treat in and of itself so do not be off put if cigars are not your thing, you will still find comfort and relaxation in this choice drink.
